4 Simple Tips for Caring for Sunflowers so They Don’t Wither Easily

Sunflowers have unique shapes and colors, making them suitable for planting in your yard. Not only yellow, sunflowers also have elegant red varieties.
This flower is one type of plant that is easy to grow, because it is able to adapt to almost any type of soil.
However, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to take good care of it. Check out the following tips for caring for sunflowers.

1. Make sure it’s exposed to direct sunlight

As the name implies, this flower really likes the sun. Young sunflowers will face east to soak up the morning sun. This flower will follow the movement of the sun to the west in the afternoon.

2. Water regularly

Sunflowers are indeed dry and heat resistant plants. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t wither if they don’t get enough water.
You only need to water the area around the root area which is about 7 to 10 cm from the stem. Don’t give it too much water, as this will cause mold growth.

3. Pay attention to the type of fertilizer

If your soil is poor in nutrients, just add compost. However, avoid applying fertilizer too close to the base of the plant. This is because too much nitrogen will cause the stems to break or bloom too late. Also, if your sunflowers are prone to bird and squirrel attacks, cover the plant with a polyspun cover.

4. Prepare a stand

If your sunflowers start to grow large, provide support for the stems to keep them upright. This method is also necessary if the plant is growing in a windy location.
