DIY Gifts for the Holiday Season
If you’re feeling crafty this holiday season, you’ve come to the right place. DIY gifts are generally less expensive than purchased gifts, are fun to make, and can showcase your creative talents. There’s just something special about a gift you’ve made yourself. And you can create just about anything. For those a little overwhelmed with the limitless possibilities, below are a few simple no sew DIY project ideas to inspire you.
Skirts and Dresses
There are many different ways to up cycle your existing wardrobe or create something new from fabric – without sewing. Got an unwanted men’s dress shirt? It can quickly be refashioned into a strapless dress or skirt, just by buttoning it and tying the arms around your waist. Take some time to try different buttoning and tying combinations and see what you come up with.
You can also up cycle an old t-shirt to make a tote bag or pillow case. To make a bag from a t-shirt, start by cutting off the sleeves. You can remove both sleeves at once by folding the shirt in half, length-wise. Next, cut out the neckline. How large you cut it will depend on how large you want your bag opening to be. Then cut slits on each side of the shirt and cut fringe along the bottom. Tie the corresponding bottom and top pieces of fringe all along the bottom of the shirt. Be sure to tie the knots tight so the bag will be secure.
To make a pillow cover, simply lay a throw pillow on a large piece of fabric. Fold the fabric over the pillow from the top and bottom. Then fold and tie the remaining sides into a bow. Since there’s no cutting involved in this project, have fun trying a few different fold and tying techniques to see what you look you like best.
If you’re looking for more fleece fabric ideas, why not make a blanket? All you need are two equally sized pieces of fleece fabric, a pen, and a pair of scissors. Cut a 2 to 4 inch square out of each corner. Then, using the same technique to make a tote bag, you’ll cut fringe all around the edges of the fabric, and then tie the corresponding top and bottom pieces of fringe together.
What better gift for your furry friend than a nice, comfy bed? You can easily make one using the same tips for making a no sew blanket and adding some cotton stuffing or scrap fabric in between before tying the fringe.
You can even give yourself a gift this holiday season. Old ottomans or chairs can be transformed with the help of some fabric and a staple gun. Need more decorations? Cover some canvases with patterned fabric to make wall art.
With a little time and creativity, you can create a unique gift that is sure to impress anyone on your gift list. You can find many more great DIY gift ideas just by searching online. If you’re really festive, why not invite your friends over for a DIY gift making party? That way, you can give each other ideas and have a lot of fun in the process.
